Chanakya's Chant by Ashwin Sanghi

Chanakya's Chant by Ashwin Sanghi, 9789380658674

The year is 340 BC. A hunted, haunted Brahmin youth vows revenge for the gruesome murder of his beloved father. Cold, cunning, calculating, cruel and armed with a complete absence of accepted morals, he becomes the most powerful political strategist in Bharat and succeeds in uniting a ragged country against the invasion of the army of that demigod, Alexander the Great. Pitting the weak edges of both forces against each other, he pulls off a wicked and astonishing victory and succeeds in installing Chandragupta on the throne of the mighty Mauryan empire. History knows him as the brilliant strategist Chanakya. But history, which exults in repeating itself, revives Chanakya two and a half millennia later, in the avatar of Gangasagar Mishra, a Brahmin teacher in smalltown India who becomes puppeteer to a host of ambitious individuals—including a certain slumchild who grows up into a beautiful and powerful woman. Modern India happens to be just as riven as ancient Bharat by class hatred, corruption and divisive politics and this landscape is Gangasagar’s feasting ground. Can this wily pandit—who preys on greed, venality and sexual deviance—bring about another miracle of a united India?

Kasab:To be Continued......

Kasab: The Face of 26/11,Rommel Rodrigues,9780143415473
He was captured on CCTV during his attacks at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus along with another terrorist, Ismail Khan. The lone gun man who has been carrying a nation's hatred year after the incident ,now got a death sentence, and is in the long queue of others who got death sentences. The audacious terror attacks jolted Mumbai like never before. Even as they mourned, the residents of Maximum City demanded answers. But the information they got in return-accounts of the investigation, government rhetoric, newspaper reports, television features, books and even a film-was sketchy at best. Meanwhile, the courts continued with their prosecution of Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving 26/11 gunman.

In this book Rommel Rodrigues portraits Kasab through the bylanes of Pakistani villages and cities as he made his way towards PoK.; the dense forests where the terrorist-training camps are situated; the trains, buses and jeeps he boarded; the Indian vessel he and the others hijacked en route to Mumbai s shores; Kasab s capture and incarceration.
Rommel Rodrigues path-breaking investigative journalism fleshes out for the first time the well thought-out planning and organization that lay behind the attacks of 26/11.

The Sunset Club

The Sunset Club by khushvant Singh,9780670085194
The Sunset Club by Khushvant Singh, another interesting novel from the veteran novelists among Indians.
The Sunset Club takes a look at old age fantasies and nostalgia as the three friends— Pandit Preetam Sharma, Nawab Barkatullah, Sardar Boota Singh — of more than 40 years sit together on a bench in Lodi Gardens to exchange news and views of the events of the day. It talks of everything from love, lust, sex and scandal. The Sunset Club is Singh’s second book this year. Previously this year his book Absolute Khushwant: The Low-Down on Life, Death and Most Things In-Between was brought out.Want to quote his words found in an interview with 'The Hindu'.So, how would he like to be remembered? He amiably offers lines of Hilaire Belloc: When I am dead, I hope it is said, “His sins were scarlet, but his books were read.”

Death of Physical Books?

I wanted to write about this topic for long. The very first question came into my mind while I think about this is, Will eBook replace paper book?
Do not be panic..I am not going to take a poll.Because so much we have read and heard about both type of books and their advantage and disadvantage..I just want to share my opinion about this topic..
As the internet and computing begins to consume more of our time, we start turning to purely electronic sources for our reading and news. When was the last time you picked up a book from a bookstore?
And then there is the smell. The wonderful, dusty, invigorating smell of a book, yellowing with age.
Well, all that is set to change, in fact has already started changing. In the past few months, we’ve been introduced to Kindle2, Nook, iPad, and so many impressive gadgets, and have woken up to a reality that e-books aren’t that bad after all, if you have such nice gadgets to read them on.
Though I miss physical books so much I support digital books also..Both have their advantage and disadvantage. But I can tell you that I get a strange pleasure in visiting a libray once or twice in a month, finding books of my favourite author or long wish-list books in neatly arranged shelf and wandering around the cool corners of library in search of some books..And also that pin drop silence.I like to lose myself in the world of books..

Children's Day Thoughts

I don’t know how to start this post. Really.
I mean where do I begin and how do I end?
And what do I write in between?
There’s so much to talk and write about when it comes to kids. Before that My hearty Wishes to all children ....A very very Happy and fun filled Children's day..
On this day most schools have a morning assembly where lots of programs & lots of speeches on children’s rights, well being,… etc. are delivered..Politicians also make many false promises to the coming generaions..
Why do I feel that the kids are maturing at a much faster rate than what it used to be? Why do I get a feeling when I talk to kids of today that they loss their innate beauty and innocence ?
Today I find it quite common that parents provide for their child each and every thing that was a luxury hard earned for them in their childhood days. In my days, we had to do something special or do something extra to earn a gift / toy / book. Today most kids just have to ask!! And now I find parents with unique problems too. Their kids just do not want to play out with their friends. Physical activities are on the down slide. It’s a virtual age and virtual world of gaming is what is more fascinating. And thanks to parents the kids today have the best of electronic gadgets to flaunt. There is absolutely no regard for money.
There is competition on every front. Today even a 3 year old is expected to undergo a rigorous interview for admission to a good nursery. What happened to our children?Children are talking like adults. They are so used to with cell phones, SMS, and other countless electronic gadgets..I am not so sure whether it is good for our kids.
They lost in touch with the physical world. They are loosing their most beautiful phases of their life in these competition filled, virtual world. They want to be the 'best' in everthing and not good.
How things have changed today! And who is to be blamed?
All of us have trapped in a world full of electronic gadgets, machines, and what else not...

I genuinely hope with a collective and conscious effort we can bring back smile on their little face ...Let them just be..

I have no problem with people who are naturally that small, but I do have a problem when people start pressuring others who might be happy with their size.Today's girls want to shed pounds more than ever before.Too much to be like favourite stars will cause serious problems like being anorexic.size zero good or bad? Well that depends on how you get there.
“You look REALLY thin,” Andy said, as she and Emily were arriving at the Runway Gala. I started a new diet,” Emily replied. “You see I don’t eat anything at all, and then just before I think I’m about to faint, I eat a cube of cheese.”
This exchange from The Devil Wears Prada is one of the funnier moments on film – i am quoting this, simply because it is so absurd.

Concern over Deepavali

The whole country is celebrating Deepavali, just a few days away in full swing..All over Face book people are wishing each other a happy Diwali others are chanting, “HAPPY DEEWALI”—it seems that everyone with an advanced degree knew what Diwali is and were happily spreading good luck and cheer.

Shops in the various parts of the country have put up mega discount sale to attract the potential buyers. Cities have been decorating with night lights and mega shopping malls have coloured their interiors with lamps, which are a trademark of this festival.

Crackers make a loud noise when fired. This contributes to noise pollution. Firecrackers can cause hearing loss, high blood pressure, sleeping disturbances and sudden exposure to loud noise can cause temporary or permanent deafness or even result in heart attack. Nausea and mental impairment are also some of the side effects of firecrackers. Pets such as dogs and cats also suffer on account of firecrackers as animals have a more sensitive sense of hearing than humans.

Finally, the amount of dust and waste generated is overwhelming. The roads are covered with millions of paper pieces soon after Deepavali. This adds up to the mounting garbage levels in various cities.

Poor children are employed in the industry and made to work all day long under poor hygienic and safety conditions. These children are exploited by being underpaid. However, since there is no one to raise voice for these innocent souls, the industries continue to discriminate the children.

“Diwali is license to celebrate throughout the night with friends. It’s not that we don’t know about its side-effects, but it comes once a year, so it’s okay,”This attitude is wrong..

Diwali is the festival of lights and we must enlighten our lives with the sparkle of joy and goodwill, forget past grievances and look ahead towards a brighter and happier future. And invest for a green future .

Time to Read!

The Confession,John Grisham,9780099545828,Donte Drumm
What would you do if you were confronted with the knowledge that you could possibly save the life of an innocent man, but by doing so could put yourself and your loved ones in the way of harm or danger? A powerful question to be sure and this book puts it on the line.
Had to put the other books on hold and jump into Grisham's latest since he seldom disappoints and this has gotten good reviews so far. Time to read!

Reqiured Reading

This is not a story about a mother and child !!!!
L
ocked in a fortified garden shed where his mother, kidnapped at 19, has been held and repeatedly raped for seven years. Room tells the story of their life inside, the only place Jack has ever known, and their adjustment to the outside world once they are free.
Room, is a unique and amazing story about a boy's day-to-day experience living in a small, windowless room with his mother. The 11' x 11' space between the walls of the room are actually all the boy knows because he was born there and has never left.
Room will horrify, surprise, sadden, and ultimately delight you. Addictive from the start, readers of all sorts won't want to put Room down.

What I like in the plot is that the book was told from the point of view of the child and not 'Ma'. After reading the synopsis i think the plot is funny but disturbing..

I have no doubt that this story will stay with me for a very long time, there are many things to consider. I am sure that this is totally unique, unlike any novel that I have read before.

Survival Story

Beautiful Thing: Inside the Secret World of Bombay’s Dance Bars by Sonia Faleiro,9780670084050

Shetty had booked them into a resort called River View (‘A Treat of a Retreat’). It had a swimming pool and a waterfall and offered a buffet of delicacies likepulao and mutton curry, golgappas and fountains of fresh, flavoured lassi.

Leela would have been happy to be a tourist, her camera slung around her neck. She had no need, she said, to dance to the loud Bollywood music a DJ in a bandana and shades was spinning, to stand under the waterfall in her new swimsuit and black lace leggings, to mirror the couples entwined in the pool—their love, their lust, a tangible thing it was only natural to want for oneself.

She could be haappy, in a quiet, regular way, just being with Shetty.

‘If he’d only sat beside me . . .’ Leela sighed. ‘But he was happy with his blue films and beer.’

When Shetty called Leela out on her glum face, she said what she always said when she didn’t want to admit she felt low.

‘I’m expecting my MC,’ she lied.

He wondered how old Leela was. She had been thirteen when they had met, thirteen when he pursued her, fourteen when she agreed to be with him. She had been fourteen when he started looking around, fifteen when he found another ‘wife’ in another dance bar, sixteen when Leela found out and confronted him. She had been sixteen when he swore to be faithful, sixteen when he broke his promise, sixteen when he started looking around again. He hadn’t kept track since. But she had been thirteen when she had first laughed at his jokes, thirteen when he had wanted her, thirteen when he swore he would never stop making her laugh. At thirteen her teeth had been like a string of Hyderabadi pearls fit for the neck of a queen.

In Bombay, a nobody could die with nothing.

Tell me, sister, would you like to join me in prayer?’

‘Yes, that would impress her. Why were these girls so taken by God anyway? Was it because God had given them nothing? Yes. Because they had nothing, they had nothing to lose.

Leela didn’t dwell on Shetty’s quick change of heart. ‘Maybe his nasha wore off?’ It didn’t matter. He was a man in a hundred. And he made her feel like the luckiest girl in the world.
