Concern over Deepavali

The whole country is celebrating Deepavali, just a few days away in full swing..All over Face book people are wishing each other a happy Diwali others are chanting, “HAPPY DEEWALI”—it seems that everyone with an advanced degree knew what Diwali is and were happily spreading good luck and cheer.

Shops in the various parts of the country have put up mega discount sale to attract the potential buyers. Cities have been decorating with night lights and mega shopping malls have coloured their interiors with lamps, which are a trademark of this festival.

Crackers make a loud noise when fired. This contributes to noise pollution. Firecrackers can cause hearing loss, high blood pressure, sleeping disturbances and sudden exposure to loud noise can cause temporary or permanent deafness or even result in heart attack. Nausea and mental impairment are also some of the side effects of firecrackers. Pets such as dogs and cats also suffer on account of firecrackers as animals have a more sensitive sense of hearing than humans.

Finally, the amount of dust and waste generated is overwhelming. The roads are covered with millions of paper pieces soon after Deepavali. This adds up to the mounting garbage levels in various cities.

Poor children are employed in the industry and made to work all day long under poor hygienic and safety conditions. These children are exploited by being underpaid. However, since there is no one to raise voice for these innocent souls, the industries continue to discriminate the children.

“Diwali is license to celebrate throughout the night with friends. It’s not that we don’t know about its side-effects, but it comes once a year, so it’s okay,”This attitude is wrong..

Diwali is the festival of lights and we must enlighten our lives with the sparkle of joy and goodwill, forget past grievances and look ahead towards a brighter and happier future. And invest for a green future .
